If I’d Known It Was the Last..
By Angela Christy Hayes
If I’d known it was the last time I’d see you, I would’ve taken the time to eat breakfast with you. Instead, I told you I was running late and didn’t have time. I just gave you a quick kiss goodbye and hurried out the door.
Now, I’m sitting here on the front porch watching the sunset, wondering how in the world I’m going to face tomorrow without you.
If I’d known it was the last time I would hear your voice, I wouldn’t have cut the call short. Instead I said Dad you could have just texted me. I just rolled my eyes and sighed when you said you loved me.
Now I’m sitting in your old truck wondering, how am I going to make my dreams come true without you here to guide me.
If I’d known it was the time we’d work cattle together, I would have told you how proud I am of the man you became. Instead I said I got to go son, your mama’s making her fried chicken tonight.
Now I’m looking at all we built together wondering what God was doing when he called you home. Son, this place isn’t worth having without you by my side.
If I’d known it was the last rodeo, I would’ve taken the time to have that cup of coffee and catch up. Instead I said I gotta get up early tomorrow. Have to make some money in order to pay some bills.
Now I’m sitting here getting ready to get in the box. As I prepare my loop, I wonder if I’ll ever be as good of a friend as you.
God knew it was the last… When you took your last breath, He took you by the hand and said come with me cowboy you had a good ride.
Now you’re up there in Heaven, staring at the biggest, shiniest buckle you ever saw. You’re wondering what a dirty ole cowboy did to be allowed into such a beautiful place.
Jesus looks at you and says, you didn’t, but I did. My Father, loved you so much, He gave Me, His only Son, so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life. I died on the cross to pay for your sins. Then three days later I rose from the dead. I conquered death for you. When I ascended to Heaven, it was to prepare a place for you, here, with me. All you had to do was believe.
You asked Me into your heart as a young man. Because you believed. You lived your life according to the Word. Because you believed. Because you believed, you will now spend eternity in Heaven. Some call it paradise, but you can call it home. You had a good ride cowboy. Now sit back and enjoy the view.
